31 States in Nigeria Risks Flooding

31 States in Nigeria Risks Flooding ; Early warning sign has been raised on impending flooding across the nation, 31 states risk been affected by the floods this year 2024. A total of 294 LGs in the 36 states are prone to moderate flooding  while a total of 148 LGs are prone to high risk flooding

This early warning sign was issued by the federal government through the Minister of Water Resources ans Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev while briefing Journalist on the 2024 annual flood outlook in the country

On the occasion, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NHSA) pointed out a total of 148 LGs in Lagos, Kano, Delta. and  other 28 states have been categorized as high flood risk  areas . the Agency advised citizens to stay off flood,, relocate residents (including live stock and produce), and to clear drainage to mitigate the impending flood  and causalities

The high risk flood states are Lagos, Niger,  Benue,  Kogi, Delta, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Rivers, Cross river, Nassarawa, Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, katsina, Sokoto, Yobe, Kwara, Gorbo, Bayelsa, Bauchi, Anambra, Akwa-Ibom, Plateau, Adamawa, Taraba, Kebbi, Ebonyi, Edo and  Imo respectively between April and November 2024

Part of 72 LGAs across the country fall within the high flood-risk areas in April, May, and June; while part of 135 LGAs in July, August, and September; and part of 44 LGAs in October and November 2024 are within the high flood-risk zones,” The Minister stated

Moderate level floods are expected in parts of 63 LGAs within April, May, and June; and in parts of 221 LGAs within July, August, and September; and parts of 100 LGAs within October and November 2024.That for the moderate flood risk, he explained that areas in this category would experience moderate flooding between April and November 2024
