Prospects of State Police in Nigeria

Prospects of State Police in Nigeria; How long will Nigeria continue to buoy section 214 of the 1999 constitution in the face of anguish experienced across the length and breadth of the country, posing a potential threat to our co-existence and national integrity?

The preponderance of the debate for state police is perceived with mixed reactions by a tapestry of stakeholders. The same has continued to dominate national discourse and must be put to rest by the establishment of state police in Nigeria; bearing in mind the prospects of state police

However, in a democratic setting, state policing is the sine qua non. Countries like Great Britain and Italy are not democratic, yet have state police for crime control. State police have been recommended by constitutional conference reviews in Nigeria, but have not seen light of the day

It is possible to say that the onus of state police in Nigeria is at the whimsical desires of the President and the national assembly

In a renewed zeal to change the narrative of insecurity in Nigeria, and to complement the efforts of the ederal police, The President and Commander in Chief of the armed forces of  the federal  republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently gave a partial node to state police

President Bola Tinubu directed the Nigeria Governors Forum to consult widely and make necessary recommendations for the implementation of state police in the country. But in spite of the constitutional tration of section 214 of the 1999 constitution as amended, some states in have gone further to establish its own security out fit to complement the  federal police

State police must be established by law to become effective, the national assembly should amend section 214 of the constitution inorder to implement state police in Nigeria
